How to Choose the Right LCD Display for Restaurant Applications
에 대한 최신 회사 뉴스 How to Choose the Right LCD Display for Restaurant Applications

The modern restaurant runs on screens. From drive-thru menu boards to kitchen display systems (KDS) and self-service kiosks, choosing the right LCD display can directly impact order accuracy, throughput speed, and customer experience.

But not all displays are built for the demands of a commercial kitchen or a busy front-of-house. Here is what matters most when selecting an LCD for restaurant environments.

Brightness: Daylight or Backlit Kitchen?

Restaurants have wildly different lighting zones. A drive-thru board faces direct sunlight at noon; a prep station sits under dim, warm-toned lighting.

  • Outdoor menu boards: 1,500–2,500 nits minimum, with anti-glare or optical bonding to cut reflections.
  • Indoor counter displays: 350–700 nits is generally sufficient.
  • Kitchen display systems: 400–500 nits with adjustable dimming for late-night shifts.

Too dim and orders are misread. Too bright in the kitchen and it becomes a distraction.

Touch Technology: Why PCAP Wins

For self-ordering kiosks and table-side ordering tablets, projected capacitive (PCAP) touch is now the standard. Unlike older resistive touch panels, PCAP supports multi-touch, stays accurate even after thousands of taps per day, and can be sealed to IP65 for spill resistance.

In kitchen environments, a non-touch display paired with physical keypad buttons may actually outperform touch — gloved hands and greasy fingers do not play well with capacitive sensors.

Durability: Grease, Heat, and Splatter

Kitchen displays face conditions no consumer monitor can survive:

  • Operating temperature: -20°C to 60°C for environments near ovens and grills.
  • IP rating: IP54 minimum for front-of-house; IP65/IP66 sealed enclosures for open-kitchen mountings.
  • Front-panel protection: Tempered glass or anti-fingerprint coating to resist grease buildup.
  • Vibration resistance: Important for mounts near dishwashers or heavy equipment.

Look for displays with fanless cooling designs — fans pull in grease-laden air and fail within months.

Size and Mounting Flexibility

Application

Size

Drive-thru menu board

32"–55"

KDS (kitchen display)

15"–24"

Self-ordering kiosk

15"–24"

Table-side ordering

7"–10"

VESA mount compatibility (75×75 to 200×200) is essential for the brackets, articulating arms, and flush enclosures used across restaurant installations.

Connectivity and Long-Term Reliability

Restaurants run 12–24 hours a day. Displays need industrial-grade power supplies, HDMI and DisplayPort inputs, and ideally a built-in controller that supports remote content updates via LAN or Wi-Fi. Commercial warranties of 3–5 years are a strong signal that the manufacturer stands behind the panel's longevity.

The Bottom Line

The right restaurant LCD is not the cheapest or the brightest — it is the one matched to the specific zone: sunlight-readable for drive-thru, spill-sealed for kitchen, touch-responsive for kiosks. Getting this match right reduces downtime, speeds up service, and keeps both staff and customers happy.
